I'm done...spent the morning hanging with Ken Grossman, the founder of Sierra Nevada. If it wasn't for him, many of us wouldn't be brewing, at home or commercially. We split a can of SNPA, talked about the new brewery in Asheville, hand-selecting Cascade hops, brewing with Cannabis Terpenes, hazy IPAs, their new Lacto project, Milk the Funk, lawsuits, sailing, getting off the grid, grit, having a plan, putting in the hard work and never giving up.....done.
The Toronto Brewing Story began in 2008 when Zack Weinberg, a traveling music lover, returned home from a trip to California with a new love, craft beer. While visiting San Francisco for a music festival, Zack came across west-coast style India Pale Ale and was amazed by the incredible hop-forward flavour that was nothing like any other brew found back home. Not wanting to depart without some, Zack tucked a few precious IPAs into his luggage and hauled them back to Toronto, where he continued to sip and ponder on his treasured tonic. He soon found a homebrew recipe online for an IPA and began to share his bottled love for craft beer with friends and family. Soon the word spread about his delicious hoppy beer which was bursting with citrus aroma and tropical fruit flavours.
“Having grown up in a beer drinking family, I was no stranger to macro-brewed lagers, but had NEVER had such a visceral experience from drinking any other type of beer.” In 2011, Zack left his day job and founded Toronto Brewing out of his basement. The vision was to create a local brewing supply store that carried hard-to-find ingredients and equipment to empower other like-minded homebrewers to create the same types of beer and experiences. Since then, Toronto Brewing has continued to grow as a company establishing itself as a thought leader in beverage design and a local institution of craft beer boasting a 4,500 square foot retail store in North Toronto and thousands of customers from coast-to-coast. Zack was recently interviewed on VICE earlier this year with Toronto Brewing as the show's first stop featured in the 'Canada' episode of BEERLAND. The business has also been featured in BlogTO, NOW Magazine's Best of the City and the Toronto Star. Inspired by the desire to incite creativity and teach others, Toronto Brewing continues to push the brewing envelope and challenge the status quo.
